IIT Kanpur Coaxial Rotors Micro Air Vehicle

For quite some time now, we have been working on developing a Coaxial Rotor Micro Air Vehicle. After some exciting research into the stability and performance of coaxial rotor toys, work was started on building a vehicle corresponding to the requirements of the NP-MICAV challenge. We used the Walkera HM5#10 rotor hub design, and the amazing Navstik.

We made our first flights early this year.

Once we got the confidence, we added an onboard wireless camera, GPS and wireless communication unit. Needless to say, we had plenty of accidents when we tried too many things at the same time. We got the endurance with the vehicle at about 10 minutes, for a weight of nearly 315 gms.

And then we took the model outside to see if it could take 10kmph winds, and it did:

The challenge is to take its endurance up till 20 minutes. With better blades and some more ingenious weight savings , we just might get it more than that. 15 minutes is the endurance of our new design:

And now to answer the most difficult question:

Q. What is the purpose of the four dangling lemons?
A. To ward off evil spirits
